Austin Deasy

Austin Deasy (Irish Aibhistín Mac Déisigh, born August 26, 1936, in Dungarvan, County Waterford ) is a former Irish politician of the Fine Gael.

Biography

Deasy worked as a teacher and began his national political career in 1973 when he was appointed by the then Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Liam Cosgrave as a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ). Subsequently, he was elected first time in 1977 as the candidate of Fine Gael as a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ) and represented there by seven subsequent re- elections until 2002, the interests of the constituency of Waterford.

After the election victory of Fine Gael, he was named on 14 December 1982 by Prime Minister Garret FitzGerald to the Minister of Agriculture in the cabinet. This office he held until the end of FitzGerald's term of office on 10 March 1987.

Last Deasy was dated 10 December 1997 to 2002 Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Successor as House of Commons Member of Parliament for the constituency of Waterford was his son John Deasy.
