Richie Ryan (politician)

Richard " Richie" Ryan ( Irish: Ó Riain Risteard ) ( born February 27, 1929 in Dublin) is a politician of the Fine Gael and former ministers.

Biography

After studying law Ryan worked as a lawyer.

He began his political career in 1957 with the election of deputies of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented until February 1982, the interests of the Fine Gael in election districts in the south of Dublin. Ryan was appointed in 1957 on 14 March 1973 by Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave as finance minister in the first government of Fine Gael. From 1 November 1973, he was also the first Irish Minister for the Civil Service. After the electoral defeat of the Fine Gael he resigned from the Cabinet on 5 July 1977.

At the general election in February 1982 he resigned for reelection in order to concentrate entirely on his seat in the European Parliament, where he served since January 1973. In May 1986, he resigned his mandate thereat and Chris O'Malley moved for him in the European Parliament after.
