Joachim Zachris Duncker

Joachim Zachris Duncker ( born November 12, 1774 Kristina, Savo, Finland, † July 6, 1809 in Hörnefors, Västerbotten, Sweden) was a Swedish soldier, most recently with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Life

Duncker comes from a German family who immigrated in the 17th century to Finland, where he was successful in military service. He was appointed in 1789 to a second lieutenant in the Savolax Jäger Regiment. In the Russo- Swedish War of 1788-1790 Duncker proved his skills and became the captain (officer ) transported.

In the Russo- Swedish War of 1808-1809 Duncker was an important officer in the Swedish army. During the retreat of the army of General CRONSTEDT of Mikkeli on Iisalmi, and Leppävirta in March 1808 to Oulu Duncker commanded the rearguard. In the battle of Pulkkila on May 2, 1808, he distinguished himself, so the Swedish general Johan August Sandels commissioned him to deliver the news of victory the king. This was followed by Duncker promotion to major. His skills meant that he could pick up the Russian invasion forces a large transport with supplies in June 1808.

The final victory of the Swedes in this war, the Battle of the Virt retreating on 27 October 1808 General Sandels won through the use of Duncker and the Colonel and the Major Fahlander Malm. After the surrender of a part of the Swedish army in Kalix in the Swedish province of Norrbotten ( about 50 km west of today's Finnish- Swedish border ) on March 25, 1809 Duncker fought in the province of Västerbotten further south of it. On 5 July 1809, he was severely wounded in the Battle of Hörnefors as commander of the rear guard, so that he died in the Russian camp a day later. He was buried in Umeå in the churchyard next to a Cossack chieftain. 1897 a memorial stone for Duncker was built in the churchyard.
