Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins

Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins ( born April 30, 1845 in Lisbon, Portugal, † August 24, 1894 same place ) was a Portuguese writer, historian, publisher, politician, and probably the most important thinkers of his country in the 19th century. He represented socialist ideas.

Life

Oliveira Martins held various activities in the course of his life, he was from 1870 to 1874 director of a mine in Cordoba, Spain, returned to Portugal in 1874 and became manager of the railway line from Porto to Póvoa de Varzim. From 1887 to 1888 he worked in shipping and returned in the same year, again back to Lisbon.

He left school early and married a 19-year.

Together with Antero de Quental he published the " Revista Occiedental ".

He was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of History and the Academy of Sciences in Lisbon.

To him, the monument to Oliveira Martins was built in Lisbon in honor.

Activity as a politician

He was a town councilor in Viana do Castelo (1895 ) and Porto ( 1887) and a member of the Portuguese Parliament from 1886 to 1894. Moreover, he was good in 1892 for four months finance minister of Portugal.

Oliveira Martins as a writer

His work bears socialist ideas. He was close to the circle of the group to the school of Coimbra for the renewal of Portuguese literature. In his writings, which have not been translated into German, he dealt mainly with historical and social issues.
