History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement of the area, in particular the excavations in Martim Vaz. The place was first mentioned 953 officially as Villa Eurazini. The name goes back to an earlier Lord of the lands called Varazim whose precise identity and survival are unknown. The area was sought after, because of the agricultural production and especially because of the fishing. So the knight D. Lourenço Fernandes tried particularly to the colonization of the lands that promised a high revenue here. His tenure was in the northern area, which was known in the 14th century as Vila Velha, and fell in large part to the Knights of Hospitaller. This area was listed as Varazim dos Cavaleiros ( Varazim of the Knights ). The southern parts, however, were under the crown, the significant tax revenues in particular got here from fishing, which fueled greed and collection attempts by the regional nobility. To end the ownership dispute, the crown united large parts of the territories and led her from now on under the name Varazim. King D. Dinis gave Varazim 1308 city rights on the condition, here is a working village ( Póvoa ) erect.

1514 renewed King D. Manuel I, the city rights. At the time, the small district town had only 500 inhabitants, but experienced with insertion of the Portuguese voyages of discovery in the 15th century a steady upswing. In the 16th and 17th centuries the city experienced a significant migration of its male population to seafaring, ship building and through emigration particularly to Brazil, in consequence of further Portuguese expansion. However, the population did not decline due to the rain influx from the interior and a high birth rate. From the middle of the 17th century, also deep-sea fishing and salt production continued to develop at the location defined by the fish and salt trade took further upswing in the sequence.

In the 18th century, Póvoa de Varzim rose to one of the most important centers of fishing in the country. The city experienced considerable wealth, which appeared in numerous buildings, such as the built around 1714 by Filippo Terzi, 7 km long, built on 999 Arches aqueduct to Vila do Conde, which begins in the Parish Terroso, and get over large parts of today has remained. From the second half of the 19th century, Póvoa de Varzim preferred target wealthy bathers, especially from the resurgent bourgeoisie of Porto and its growing industrial belt, and wealth Come in Brazil returnees. The 1875 arrived railway line from Porto and in 1874 inaugurated horse tram ( Americano ) from Vila do Conde spurred the development of the resort, the guests with its bourgeois cafés, concert halls and casinos attracted. So to this day the fishing, tourism and the casino are still the pillars of the local economy
