Joaquín Capilla

Joaquín Capilla Pérez ( born December 23, 1928 in Mexico City; † May 8, 2010 ) was a Mexican diver. He received a total of four medals in three Olympics.

Capilla won the bronze medal in platform diving behind the Americans Samuel Lee and Bruce Harlan at the 1948 Olympic Games in London. He was the first Mexican diver, who won an Olympic medal. In diving, he finished fourth behind three Americans.

In 1951 he won at the Pan American Games in Buenos Aires, both in art and in diving. This double victory he could repeat in his hometown in 1955. In Helsinki at the 1952 Olympics, he was the springboard again fourth behind three Americans. From the tower, he won silver behind Samuel Lee. Fifth was Alberto Capilla, the older brother of Joaquin.

In his third at the Olympics 1956 in Melbourne Joaquín Capilla, the first medal win succeeded in springboard diving, behind the Americans Robert Clotworthy and Donald Harper, he received the bronze medal. The year before he had Clotworthy narrowly beaten at the Pan American Games. From the tower Joaquín Capilla succeeded the Olympic victory over Gary Tobian with whole 0.03 points ahead. The U.S. team leadership appealed against two judges, a protest, but was rejected.

In civilian life architect, Joaquín Capilla was regarded as the founder of the Mexican diver tradition. Capilla was the first diver who showed the three and a half times the pike Alto. In 1976 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport.
