Joe Hewitt (footballer born 1881)

Joseph "Joe" Hewitt ( May 3, 1881 in Chester, † March 12 1971 in Liverpool) was an active in the early 20th century English football player. He was striker and played for most of his career at Liverpool.

Life

Born in Chester 1881 Joe Hewitt began his career at Sunderland AFC. In January 1904 he moved to FC Liverpool. Although he quickly established himself after his debut on 13 February 1904 in the first team of the club, he could not prevent the descent of the Reds in the Second Division at the end of the season 1903/ 04.

The following season, Liverpool tried and failed to promotion back to the First Division, with Hewitt only nine games played. In the following season 1905/ 06 but he became an important player in the team, as he scored 24 goals in his 36 games and that was the top scorer of his team, which won the championship as a climber.

Hewitt played four games at the start of the 1909/10 season for Liverpool, where he scored 74 goals in 164 games. He then played one season at Bolton Wanderers and finished after his pro career.

After the end of his career as an active player Hewitt continued to work at Liverpool. He died in 1971 at the age of 89 years.
