Johann Gildemeister

Johann Gustav Gildemeister ( born July 20, 1812 Hofgut small Siemen (now Kropelin ), Duchy of Mecklenburg, † March 11, 1890 in Bonn ) was a German orientalist.

Life

Johann Gildemeister attended high school in Bremen and was taught by Friedrich Adolph Krummenacher in Hebrew. In 1832 studied in Göttingen Heinrich Ewald and from 1834 to 1836 at the University of Bonn theology and oriental languages ​​at August Wilhelm von Schlegel, Christian Lassen and George William Freytag. He then spent a year in Leiden and Paris in order to use the camping manuscript libraries. Gildemeister doctorate September 8, 1838 in Bonn. He has taught since 1839 as a lecturer in Bonn, where he became in 1844 as an associate professor of oriental languages. Appointed at the University of Marburg since 1845 as professor of theology and Oriental Literature, 1848 there librarian. In 1859 he was called back as a full professor of Oriental, especially Semitic languages ​​to Bonn. He was a member of the "German Oriental Society " and the "German Society for the Exploration of Palestine ". In the autumn of his deteriorating health forced him to 18809 to end its teaching activity. One of his major students of that time was Eugen Prym.

1840/41 he was a friend of Bruno Bauer. In 1852 he married his cousin Joan Gildemeister.

Part of his legacy is preserved handwritten Philipps- University of Marburg. The University and Regional Library of Saxony -Anhalt Library of the German Oriental Society retains some of his personal library.
