Johann Jakob Weilenmann

Johann Jakob Weilenmann ( born January 24, 1819 in St. Gallen, † June 8, 1896 ) was a Swiss mountaineer. He made ​​numerous first ascents in the Alps.

The son of a private school principal completed an apprenticeship at the St. Gallen textile trading house Johann Conrad Fehr. This firm Weilenmann worked as a merchant in New York and in Pernambuco. In Brazil, he built up a collection of insects, which he later gave to the Zurich Polytechnic. After 1850 he lived again in St. Gallen and began climbing. In 1863 he was one of the founders of the Swiss Alpine Club.
