Johann Mayrhofer

Johann Baptist Mayrhofer ( born October 22, 1787 Steyr, † February 5, 1836 in Vienna ) was an Austrian poet and close friend of the composer Franz Schubert.

Life and work

Mayrhofer was the son of Gerichtsprokurators and from 1806-1810 a member of the congregation Sankt Florian in Upper Austria. After his discharge from the pin, he studied in Vienna jurisprudence and theology. He completed both studies successfully. During his studies he was a friend of the writer Theodor Körner. From 1814 to the end of his life Mayrhofer was the " books as auditor K. K. Books audit office " under the state censor automatically by the Metternich regime. On these livelihood he was instructed against its actual political stance.

In Vienna, he became in 1814 by Joseph von Spaun composer Franz Schubert know and lived with the younger boyfriend from 1818 to 1821 in a shared apartment in the house right next to the Old Town Hall in the Wipplingerstraße. Schubert set to music poems by 47 Mayrhofer, including the well-known song of a boatman on the Dioscuri as well as the angry Diana. Mayrhofer created for him also the libretti for two stage works that were not listed during the lifetime of the authors: both the Singspiel Die Freunde von Salamanca ( 1815) and the opera set to music by Schubert Adrast the text are merely survived. Ernst von Feuchtersleben decided not to publish his manuscripts still present in the edition of Mayrhofer's posthumous seals.

1824 published a collection of his poems. In 1829 he published in the journal New Archive for History 's "Memories of Franz Schubert ", have been handed down by some remarkable information about Schubert and his circle of friends. In 1836 he died in Vienna by suicide as a result of a depressed push.
