John Anderson (zoologist)

John Anderson ( born October 4, 1833 in Edinburgh, † August 15, 1900 in Buxton, Derbyshire, England) was a Scottish zoologist.

Life and work

His father Thomas Anderson was secretary of the National Bank of Scotland. John Anderson was born in Edinburgh. He worked in the National Bank of Scotland and studied medicine in Edinburgh in 1861; In the same year he went to India. In 1862 he received from Edinburgh to M.D. He was professor of natural history at the Free Church College in Edinburgh. In 1864 he was curator of the Indian Museum (Imperial Museum of India) in Calcutta. He remained in this position until 1887; he was replaced by James Wood - Mason. Towards 1877 he was Professor of Comparative Anatomy at the Medical College in Calcutta.

Anderson collected intensively zoological specimens in Egypt it was based on his work Zoology of Egypt. During his time in India he also led numerous collection trips through China and Burma. He was the first to describe a whole range of animal species and also by him a few species have been named, including some of the parasitic cancer Sacculina andersoni by Giard, 1887. 1886 Anderson put his offices. He died in 1900 in Buxton, England.

Honors and offices

Anderson was a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Linnean Society. In the Royal Society, he was in 1879 as a member ( "Fellow" ) was added. He was also a member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and member of the Senate of the University of Calcutta.
