John Barrett (tennis)

John Barrett ( born April 17, 1931 in London ) is an English former tennis player and author and sports journalist.

Life

Barrett came in 1931 in London's Mill Hill to the world. He attended the University College School in Hampstead and then studied at St John's College, Cambridge.

Between 1950 and 1970, he appeared regularly at the Wimbledon Championships, and reached there on several occasions the third round. In 1956, he played a single game for the British Davis Cup team. In doubles with Roger Becker, he defeated the Chilean Luis Ayala and Andres Hammersley.

Barrett married in April 1967 Angela Mortimer, the Wimbledon champion of 1961.

Since 1963, Barrett worked as a tennis correspondent for the Financial Times. In 1971 he became the successor of Dan Maskell as a TV commentator for the BBC for the tournament of Wimbledon and remained so until his retirement in 2006. He also published several books, including to 2001, the official Tennis Yearbooks of the International Tennis Federation ( World of Tennis ).
