John Carisi

John E. "Johnny" Carisi ( born February 23, 1922 in Hasbrouck Heights / New Jersey; † October 3, 1992 in New York City ) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer.

Life and work

Carisi was on the trumpet initially self-taught, but studied in high school instrument and composition. 1948 to 1950 he studied composition with Stefan Wolpe. He has played in the band of Herbie Fields (1938-1943) and then joined band in Glen Miller's Airforce one. After the Second World War he worked for Ray McKinley, Claude Thornhill, Charlie Barnet, Urbie Green and Benny Goodman. Since the 1950s he has also worked in television, especially in Your Show of Shows his ex-colleagues Sid Caesar and Philco Playhouse. He continued to play on recordings by Tony Scott or Paul Quinichette. Shortly before his death, he has recorded a duo with guitarist James Chirillo.
