John Henry Muirhead

John Henry Muirhead ( born April 28, 1855 in Glasgow, † 24 May 1940 Rutherfield ) was an English philosopher who was known in particular through the creation of the book series Muirhead Library of Philosophy in 1890. In 1900 he became the first Chair of Philosophy at the University of Birmingham in 1900.

Muirhead was from 1866 - 1879 taught at the Glasgow Academy and then moved to Glasgow University. He was strongly influenced by Edward Caird and is attributed to the British idealism. In 1875, he went to Balliol College. His book series first appeared in Publishing Allen & Unwin and existed until the 1970s. In this series, published works of Ernest Albee, Brand Blanshard, Francis Herbert Bradley, Axel Hager electricity, Henri Bergson, Edmund Husserl, Bernard Bosanquet, Irving Thalberg, Jr., Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and George Edward Moore.

Together with Bernard Bosanquet he founded in London in 1881 London Ethical Society.
