John I of Aragon

John I, called the huntsman, in Catalan Joan el Caçador in Aragonese Chuan o Cazataire, in Spanish Juan el Cazador, (* December 27, 1350 in Perpignan, † May 19 1396 in the forest near Foixà, Girona ) was from 1387 to 1396 King of Aragon and from 1387 to 1390 Duke of Neopatria.

Life

John was the eldest son of King Peter IV of Aragon from his third marriage to Eleanor of Sicily, daughter of King Peter II as Crown Prince he bore the title of Duke of Girona, he broke with his father because of his fourth wife and their coronation as queen. He succeeded as King of Aragon 1387th

Johann turned after his accession on the part of Pope Clement VII, after his father had taken a position in the Western schism. Significant influence on this decision had his second marriage with the niece of the French king Charles V.

He finished the war with his father Castile, France, Genoa and Naples, but had to fend off uprisings in Sicily and Sardinia, the latter he lost all of Eleonora of Arborea.

The king was cracking down on anti-Semitic riots occurring in his country, created in the Cortes of Catalonia the fourth estate of the gentry, who remained but without influence. Johann was considered passive and dealt almost exclusively with hunting. He left the government largely of his second wife.
