John Joseph O'Connor

John Joseph Cardinal O'Connor ( born January 15, 1920 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; † 3 May 2000, New York ) was a Roman Catholic priest. He was from 1984 until his death in 2000, Archbishop of New York.

Life

John Joseph O'Connor was born on January 15, 1920 as the fourth of five children of Thomas O'Connor and Mary O'Connor Gomble. At age 16, he entered the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia and studied Catholic theology there. On December 15, 1945 O'Connor received the sacrament of Holy Orders by Hugh Louis Lamb, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, and was initially for seven years as a pastor in the archdiocese. From 1953 he worked almost 27 years as a military chaplain.

Pope John Paul II appointed him in 1979 as Titular Bishop of Cursola and Militärweihbischof of the U.S. armed forces. He received his episcopal consecration John Paul II on May 27, 1979. Were co-consecrators the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Archbishop Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy, and the substitute of the Secretariat of State, Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo.

On May 6, 1983, he was appointed bishop of Scranton and introduced into the office on 29 June of the same year. Only a few months later, on 26 January 1984 he was appointed Archbishop of New York. The inauguration took place on 19 March of the same year.

In 1983 he was the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem, Maximilien de Furstenberg, appointed Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Eastern United States Holy grave in Jerusalem, based in New York.

John Joseph O'Connor died on 3 May 2000 in New York.

O'Connor was regarded as extremely conservative, but was also known for his strong advocacy of the rights of workers and the poor.
