John M. Carroll (politician)

John Michael Carroll ( * April 27, 1823 in Springfield, New York, † 8 May 1901 in Johnstown, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Michael Carroll was born about eight years after the end of the British - American War in Springfield in Otsego County and grew up there. During this time he attended public schools. He graduated from Fairfield Seminary. Then he went to Union College in Schenectady, which he left in 1846 as a civil engineer again. During this time he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1848. He practiced in Fonda and Broadalbin. Between 1859 and 1862 he was a prosecutor ( prosecuting attorney ) in Fulton County. He moved in 1862 to Johnstown, where he pursued his activities as a lawyer again. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1870 for the 42nd Congress Carroll was in the 18th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Stephen Sanford on March 4, 1871. Since he gave up for reelection in 1872, he retired after the March 3, 1873 out of the Congress.

After his time he went to Congress until his death his work as a lawyer in Johnstown. He died on 8 May 1901, was then buried in the Johnstown Cemetery.
