John MacGregor, Baron MacGregor of Pulham Market

John Roddick Russell MacGregor, Baron MacGregor of Pulham Market OBE ( born February 14, 1937 in Glasgow, Scotland ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party.

Life

After visiting the Merchiston Castle School, he studied at the University of St Andrews, the oldest university in Scotland, and then at King's College London.

His political career began as a candidate of the Conservative Party when it was first a member of the lower house (House of Commons ) was elected in 1974 and in this until 2001, the constituency represented Norfolk South.

In 1985 he was appointed by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for the first time in the government and was there first Chief Secretary of the Treasury (Chief Secretary of the Treasury ), after he had already been before in her shadow cabinet expert for the Treasury. Following a cabinet reshuffle in 1987 he first Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, before he was Minister of Education and Science between 1989 and 1990.

After the inauguration of Thatcher's successor John Major as Prime Minister MacGregor 1990 Lord President of the Council was, at the same time as such until 1992, leaders of the ruling majority in the lower house and thus Leader of the House of Commons. As a Major in 1992 reshaped his government, he was Minister of Transport and had that position until 1994.

After retiring from the House, he was raised as a life peer with the title Baron MacGregor of Pulham Market in the peerage on 5 July 2001 and, as such, the House of Lords (House of Lords) as a member.
