John Gummer

John Selwyn Gummer, Baron Deben (* November 26, 1939 in London) is a British politician.

Biography

After attending school, he completed a degree in history at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge.

His political career began in 1970 as a candidate of the Conservative Party with the election of deputies of the lower house, where he represented the constituency of Lewisham West. After his defeat in the general election in 1974 he lost this mandate, however, was in 1979 again elected member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Eye. Since 1983 he is a member of the lower house in the constituency of Suffolk Coastal.

In 1983 he was appointed as Minister of State for Labour in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was then 1984-1985 Paymaster General ( Paymaster General ). During this time he was until 1989 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Conservative Party.

He was appointed as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food back in the Thatcher government in 1989 and held that office in the subsequent government of Prime Minister John Major until 1993. According to a reshuffle of the Cabinet Gummer was between 1993 and 1997 Environment Minister ( Secretary of State for the Environment ).

He is a council member of the World Future Council.

Membership in the House of Lords

Gummer was in the County of Suffolk, appointed on 21 June 2010 Life peer as Baron Deben, of Winston. His maiden speech in the House of Lords he held on 21 July 2010.

When his political interests he is on the website of the House of Lords on European affairs and environmental policy.

Gummer, who converted from the Church of England to Catholicism in 1992, was also the author of several books in which he dealt with issues of society, politics and religion. His publications include:
