John Monckton (swimmer)

John James Monckton ( born November 23, 1938 in Armidale, New South Wales ) is a former Australian swimmer. He won the silver medal in the 100 meters backstroke at the Olympic Summer Games 1956. Although he swam numerous world records, he never won a gold medal at the Olympic Games.

Career

Summer Olympic Games 1956

Monckton, who began an apprenticeship as a carpenter, was the top favorite to win the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in 1956 because he before the Games was the first person in the national team match in Townsville, who swam 400 meters backstroke in under five minutes. He also installed world records over 110 and 220 yards freestyle.

At the Olympic Games in 1956, however, he only won the silver medal, although he 1:03,4 min or swam in the flow and in the semi-final with the fastest time 1:04,1 min. He lost the final of his teammate David Theile. Monckton swam with 1:03,2 min about a second slower than the parts ( 1:02,2 min).

Commonwealth Games 1958

After the parts took a break to devote himself to his medical studies, John Monckton dominated the swimming scene at the Commonwealth Games in 1958., Where he won gold over 110 yards back and the 4 × 110 yards medley relay.

Olympic Games 1960

Monckton is now prepared for the next 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. Again John Mockton dominated the heats, when he again took first place. After that he began to build up, however, reached the semi-finals only place in the final four and finally only 7th place, however, it failed the turn and he broke a finger.
