John Ngu Foncha

John Ngu Foncha ( born June 21, 1916 in Bamenda, † April 10, 1999 ) was a Cameroonian politician.

Career

Foncha began his political career in 1942 as Secretary of the Cameroon Youth League in his home town of Bamenda. From 1942 to 1957 he was founder and president of the Catholic Teachers' Association Bamenda and 1945-1954 President of the Nigerian Association of Teachers.

From 1949 to 1950 he organized the construction of a representation of the Cameroon National Federation in Bamenda. This he left to found together with Nerius Namaso Moite, the deputy leader of the Cameroon People's National Congress, the Cameroon United National Congress to force a union with the French part of Cameroon.

1953, the Cameroon National Federation and the Cameroon People's National Congress came together to Cameroon National Congress.

1955 left Foncha the Cameroon National Congress because of a dispute concerning the reunification of Cameroon and founded the Kamerun National Democratic Party ( KNDP ).

On 1 February 1959, he became Prime Minister of British Cameroon and held that post until the merger with the French part of Cameroon on 1 October in 1961.

Until May 13, 1965 Foncha was also Prime Minister of West Cameroon and Vice President of the Federal Republic of Cameroon. This office he held until May 1970.

In 1994 he led a delegation of the secessionist Southern Cameroons National Council ( SCNC ), which began at the United Nations for greater autonomy of the English-speaking provinces of Cameroon.

Private

A teacher by training and practicing Catholics John Ngu Foncha was married and had seven children.
