John Russell (musician)

John Russell (born 1954 in London ) is a British guitarist in the area of free jazz and new music improvisation.

John Russell began in 1965 playing the guitar and began to appear in 1971 in and around London in clubs. From 1972, he belonged to the British free jazz scene, playing at clubs like The Little Theatre Club, Ronnie Scott 's, The Institute of Contemporary Arts, as well as with groups of artists The Musicians ' Co - Op and the London Musicians' Collective. In 1974 he played in the quintet with pianist Steve Beresford ( Teatime ). From 1974 on, he worked as a teacher, had television and radio appearances, and went on extensive tours in the UK and Europe. In 1978, his first album with solo improvisations ( 'From Next to Last ). In June 1980 he joined the band of Günter Christmann along with Maggie Nichols, Maarten Altena, Paul Lovens on the Moers Jazz Festival; In 1981 he founded the formation Quaqua and then took on a series of albums for the label Emanem and ACTA, with John Butcher and Phil Durrant. 1988 co-founded the long-standing series of concerts in the field of improvised music MOPOMOSO.

In addition to his own projects, Russell worked in the early 1990s in the Butcher / Durrant / Russell trio, the Chris Burn Ensemble (navigational 1997), in a duo with Stefan Keune, also with Roger Turner, Phil Minton, Gina Southgate, Evan Parker, Hugh Davies and Luc Houtkamp, as well as in the formation London Air Lift (1996 /87) with Evan Parker, John Edwards and Mark Sanders. In 2005 he played in Evan Parker octet as an ensemble of Lol Coxhill, 2006, he participated in a formation with John Butcher, Roger Turner, Thomas Lehn, Dorothea Schürch and Günter Christmann. With Roger Turner and Michel Doneda it occurs in the trio.
