Roger Turner (musician)

Roger Turner ( born 1946 in Whitstable, near Canterbury ) is a British drummer of modern jazz improvisation and new music.

Life and work

Turner, who studied at Sussex University, made ​​his first appearance as a professional jazz musician in 1966 with Chris Biscoe in Brighton. In 1968 he went to London, where he became a member of the Ghanaian percussion group mask. He also toured with the experimental Ritual Theatre, which in 1972 he recorded his first recordings for the BBC.

In the early 1970s he performed as a soloist at the Bracknell Jazz Festival and the Festival of Percussion at Bruxelles. In 1979 he played with saxophonist Gary Todd recorded the album Sunday Best. In the same year with John Russell and Toshinori Kondo, he recorded the album Artless Sky. In 1981 Turner his first solo album The Blur Between.

1980 and 1983, he received scholarships from the Arts Council to deepen his knowledge of percussion and electroacoustic music. 1984 to 1985 he attended classes at Alan Silva's school in Paris. At the same time he worked with experimental rock groups and singers such as Annette Peacock, Phil Minton and Vanessa Mackness. He was also musical partner of Toshinori Kondo, Derek Bailey, Dorothea Schürch, Evan Parker, Cecil Taylor and Otomo Yoshihide and performed with groups such as the Phil Minton Quartet ( with Veryan Weston and John Butcher ), the Recedents ( with Lol Coxhill and Mike Cooper ) and In the tradition ( with Alan Silva and Johannes Bauer ), in duos with Phil Minton and John Russell and different groups Martin Klappers on. Together with Tim Hodgkinson and Thomas Lehn it forms since 1997, the improvising trio Konk Pack, which he has so far presented three albums and toured North America in 2001.
