John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer

John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer ( born December 19, 1734 Althorp, Northamptonshire, † October 31, 1783 in Bath, Somerset ) was a British nobleman. From 1761 to 1765 he was known as John Spencer, 1st Viscount Spencer.

Life

John Spencer was the only son of the politician The Honourable John Spencer (1708-1746) and his wife Lady Georgiana Caroline Carteret (1716-1780), youngest daughter of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville and his first wife Lady Frances Worsley. He was a great-grandson of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and a grandson of the politician Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, who was best known for his involvement in the South Sea Bubble (South Sea Bubble ).

John Spencer studied at Trinity College, University of Cambridge philosophy and politics. Between 1756-1761 he was a deputy ( Whig ) for the District of Warwick. From 1772 he was also High Steward of St Albans and 1779 he was mayor of St Albans.

On December 20, 1755 John Spencer married at Althorp House in Northamptonshire Lady Margaret Georgiana Poyntz ( 1737-1814 ), a subsidiary of The Honourable Stephen Poyntz and Anna Maria Mordaunt. From the joint compound produced five children:

John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer died during a spa stay in southern England Bath and his remains were in Great Brington, Northamptonshire, buried.

His daughter, Henrietta Frances Ponsonby, Countess of Bessborough, had a love affair with the British statesman and diplomat Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Earl Granville ( 1773-1846 ). From this union a daughter, Lady Harriet Emma Arundel Stewart, later Duchess of Leeds († 1852), produced. Later he married her niece Lady Harriet Cavendish, a daughter of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire.
