John T. Spriggs

John Thomas Spriggs ( born April 5, 1825 Peterborough, United Kingdom, † December 23, 1888 in Utica, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1883 and 1887 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Thomas Spriggs was born during the reign of George IV in the county of Northamptonshire. The family emigrated in 1836 to the United States and settled in Whitesboro in Oneida County. He attended Hamilton College in Clinton, and then graduated in 1848 from Union College in Schenectady. Spriggs studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in 1848 he began to practice in Whitesboro. His study period was overshadowed by the Mexican-American War. In 1853 he was Attorney ( prosecuting attorney ) in Oneida County and 1854 County Treasurer. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. It was started in 1860 as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore in part. The following years were marked by civil war. Between 1868 and 1880 he was mayor of Utica. During this time he took in 1872 and in 1880 in part as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions.

In the congressional elections of 1882 for the 48th Congress Spriggs was the 23rd electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Cyrus D. Prescott on March 4, 1883. He was re-elected once. In 1886 he suffered during his second re-election candidacy a defeat and then resigned on 3 March 1887 the Congress of. During his last term he had presided over the Committee on Accounts.

Then he went back to his work as a lawyer after. He died on December 23, 1888 in Utica and was then buried in the same cemetery in Whitesboro.
