John William Sutton Pringle

Sir John William Sutton Pringle ( born July 22, 1912 in Manchester, † November 2, 1982 in Oxford ) was a British zoologist. He dealt with the physiology of insects, mainly with the proprioceptors, the flight muscles of insects and the singing of the cicadas.

Life and work

Pringle studied at King's College, Cambridge. He earned his degree specific to Cambridge Natural Sciences Tripos. It was 1937/38 in Cambridge Appointed demonstrator in zoology and 1938-1944 Fellow at King 's College. After military service as a radar reconnaissance, he returned to Cambridge and worked as a lecturer in zoology and a Fellow of Peterhouse. In 1959 he was Appointed Reader for Experimental Cytology. In 1961 he was appointed to the Linacre Chair of Zoology at Oxford University.

Pringle was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1954.
