Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole

Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole ( born March 26, 1871 in Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii Kingdom, † January 7, 1922 in Waikīkī, Hawaii ) was an American politician. Between 1903 and 1922 he represented as a delegate the Hawaii Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and rise in the Kingdom of Hawaii

Jonah Kalanianaole grew up in the Kingdom of Hawaii. He attended the Royal School and Punahou College, Honolulu. He then studied for four years at St. Matthew 's College in California. Subsequently, he attended an agricultural school and a commercial school in England. Kalanianaole was by birth a relative of the royal family of Hawaii. In 1884 he was elevated to a royal prince. He had in Hawaii also has a prominent place in line to the throne and was given a leading position in the Ministry of Interior of the Kingdom.

Transition time to the United States

After the monarchy was overthrown, he participated in 1895 in a failed counter-revolution. For this he was punished by one year's imprisonment. In the years 1899-1902 he traveled to the African continent. There he participated on the British side at the Boer War. In the meantime, Hawaii became a territory of the United States. After his return Kalanianaole was a member of the Republican Party.

Kalanianaole in the U.S. Congress

In the congressional elections of 1902 he was elected against incumbent Robert William Wilcox as a delegate of the Territory of Hawaii in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. After he was confirmed in all subsequent congressional elections in this office, he was able to exercise the mandate between 4 March 1903 to his death on January 7, 1922. Since Hawaii was not an official state in the U.S. at that time, he had in Congress, however, no voting rights. Nevertheless, he continued in 1920 by the so-called Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, which helps in Hawaii received a national law, the indigenous population. In 1917 he had a club to improve the education and the promotion of traditional culture in Hawaii founded. After his death, the former prince was buried in the Royal Mausoleum in Nuuanu.
