Thomas Gill (U.S. politician)

Thomas Ponce Gill ( * April 21, 1922 in Honolulu, Hawaii, † June 3, 2009 ) was an American politician.

Life

Gill visited in 1940 and 1941, the University of Hawaii. From December 1941 to October 1942 he was a member of the Hawaii Territorial Guard. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Army and fought in New Guinea and the Philippines. In November 1945, Gill retired from active service. During his time in the Army of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart he was awarded. He then continued his studies and attended the University of California. There he completed his studies in 1948 and studied until 1951 at the Law School of the University on. That same year, Gill was inducted into the legal profession and practiced in Honolulu.

Between 1954 and 1958 he was chairman of the local branch of the Democratic Party in Oahu County (Oahu County Democratic Committee). In 1960 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Gill was a member of the Territorial Parliament and was also represented from 1959 to 1962 in the House of Representatives of the new State. He was elected as a Democrat to Congress and represented there, from 3 January 1963 to January 3, 1965 his home state in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1964, he did not run again for a seat in the House of Representatives, but was trying to be elected to the U.S. Senate. Here, however, he had to admit defeat the Republican incumbent Hiram Fong.

From 1965 to 1966, Gill Director of the Hawaii Office of Economic Opportunity, and from 1966 to 1970 he held the office of Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii. After he retired from politics and began practicing again in his former profession. He lived most recently in Honolulu.
