William S. Richardson

William Shaw Richardson ( born December 22, 1919 in Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, † June 21, 2010 ) was an American politician and lawyer. Between 1962 and 1966 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Hawaii.

Career

William Richardson attended Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, followed by the University of Hawaii. He then studied at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio law. During the Second World War he was a captain in the United States Army. He served in an infantry unit, which consisted mainly of Filipino soldiers (1st Filipino Infantry ). Even after the end of the war he remained in the Army until 1946, in which he then belonged to the Judge Advocate General's Corps. He then practiced as a private attorney.

Politically, Richardson joined the Democratic Party. From 1956 to 1962 he was its chairman in Hawaii. In the years 1956 and 1960, he participated as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions. He also served as Chief Clerk to the Senate of the Hawaii Territory, 1955 to 1959. From 1961 to 1962 he also served as President of the Bar Association of Hawaii.

1962 Richardson was elected to the side of John Anthony Burns to the Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii. This post he held between December 2, 1962 December 2, 1966. Yet he was assistant to the governor. Between 1966 and 1982 he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii Chief Justice of the state. In this capacity, he made a name for himself when he campaigned in some leading judgments for the protection of nature and especially the beaches against economic interests. After the end of his tenure as Chief Justice was William Richardson 1983-1992 curator of the Kamehameha Schools. He died on 21 June 2010 in Honolulu.
