Jonathan Nicoll Havens

Jonathan Nicoll Havens ( born June 18, 1757 Shelter Iceland, Suffolk County, New York, † October 25, 1799 ) was an American politician. Between 1795 and 1799 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jonathan Nicoll Havens grew up during the British colonial period and studied classical archeology. In 1777 he graduated from Yale College. Between 1783 and 1787 he was town clerk (town clerk ) of Shelter Iceland. He sat 1786-1795 in the New York State Assembly. During this time he ratified on January 8, 1788 the United States Constitution. The increase of public education for him was of great importance. In this connection he had in 1795 the chair of the committee for the establishment of public schools in New York. In the same year he was Justice of the Peace in Suffolk County. As opponents of a strong central government, he joined at that time, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1794 Havens was elected in the first district of New York at the time which meets even in Philadelphia U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of John Watts on March 4, 1795. He was re-elected twice in a row. He died during his last term of office on October 25, 1799 in Shelter Iceland and was buried there on the southern cemetery of the Presbyterian Church.
