Jorge María Mejía

Jorge María Mejía Cardinal (born 31 January 1923 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a retired cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Jorge María Mejía studied Catholic theology and philosophy and received in 1945 the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies in Rome, he completed his doctorate in Catholic theology and a degree in Biblical theology.

Then worked as a professor of Old Testament exegesis at the Catholic University of Buenos Aires. He was editor of a Catholic magazine and observers at the Second Vatican Council. He also knew from 1967 to 1977, the Office of the Secretary of the Latin American office for questions of ecumenism.

In 1977 he was appointed secretary of the Commission for Relations between the Holy See and the Jews. 1986 Pope John Paul II appointed him as Vice-President of the Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace and Titular Archbishop of Apollonia. On April 12 of the same year he received by Cardinal Roger Etchegaray episcopal ordination.

1994 Mejía was then secretary of the Congregation for Bishops, 1998 Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church. On 21 February 2001, Pope John Paul II was a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Girolamo della Carita to the College of Cardinals.

On 24 November 2004 John Paul II Mejía adopted for reasons of age pre- mounted resignation. Because of the age limit, he took part in the conclave not in 2005 and not at the conclave of 2013.

On 21 February 2011, he was charged while maintaining his pro hac vice declared for titular church diaconal titles cardinal priest.

On March 12, 2013, he suffered a heart attack and was then taken to a Roman hospital.
