José María Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia

Cardinal José María Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia ( born August 26, 1835 in Aldeadávila de la Rivera, Spain, † December 8, 1922 in Santiago de Compostela ) was Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba and from 1889 Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela.

Life

José María Martín studied theology and canon law at Salamanca and received in September 1859, the ordination. After he initially worked as a priest in Salamanca, he was president of the 1865 Collegiate de Logroño. In 1871 he was Domdekan in the diocese of León. Pope Pius IX. appointed him in 1875 as Auditor of the Roman Rota.

The Office, however, never came to Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia, because he was not chosen in the same year as Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba. He received his episcopal consecration on October 3, 1875 Cardinal Juan de la Cruz Ignacio Moreno y Maisonave, Archbishop of Toledo. Co-consecrators were Francisco de Paula Benavides y Navarrete, Patriarch of the West Indies, and Francisco de Sales Crespo y Bautista, Bishop of Mondoñedo. King Alfonso XII. struck the 40 -year-old even then before appointing a cardinal. In the following years he was appointed to the Senate of the Spanish kingdom. José María Martín also wrote numerous pastoral letters. On 14 February 1889, he became Archbishop and Metropolitan of Santiago de Compostela and returned from Cuba.

Pope Leo XIII. took him on 19 April 1897 as Cardinal Priest of Santa Maria in Traspontina to the College of Cardinals. After the death of Leo XIII. he took part in the conclave in 1903, the Pius X chose, and the conclave in 1914, the Benedict XV. chose. After his death, the 87 -year-old Cardinal Martín de Herrera y de la Iglesia took from age and health reasons not participate in the conclave in 1922. He died in the same year and was buried in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
