José Miguel Insulza

José Miguel Insulza Salinas ( born June 2, 1943 in Santiago de Chile) is a Chilean politician.

Life

Insulza studied law and political science at the Universidad de Chile, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias the Sociales and the University of Michigan. He then worked as a lecturer at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad Central de Chile and Universidad de Chile.

In the early 1970s he became involved in the Popular Unity, headed by Salvador Allende. From 1972 he worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As at September 11, 1973 took place the military coup of Augusto Pinochet, himself Insulza held on abroad and was not allowed to enter the country to Chile. By 1981 he was in exile in Rome and then moved to Mexico, where he taught at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Universidad Iberoamericana among others.

After the start of the transition in Chile, he returned to Chile and worked in the Foreign Ministry. In September 1994 he took over the post of foreign minister, which he held until June 1999. From this time he was to March 2000 Minister of the Secretaría General de la Presidencia de Chile, then to May 2005 Chilean Interior Minister. On 26 May 2005 he took over the post of Secretary General of the Organization of American States, for which he was re-elected in March 2010.
