Josef Polig

Josef pole ( born November 9, 1968 in Sterzing ) is an Italian former Alpine skier. Highlight the career of the South Tyrolean was the victory in the combination at the Olympic Winter Games in 1992; in the World Cup he went 14 times into the top ten.

Career

Poligs first major success was winning the Italian championship in the combination in 1988. In the World Cup he binned the first time in the combination of Wengen on January 22, 1989, the top ten, a little later he won at the World Championships in Vail ninth place in the combination. In the following years he reached several times the top 10 in the World Cup, the best result was fifth place in the combination of Kitzbuehel on January 19 1992.

At the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville pole did not belong to the narrower circle of favorites, yet there he managed the biggest success of his career with the sixth place in the downhill and the fifth in the slalom he won ahead of his compatriot Gianfranco Martin, who surprisingly also reached the podium the gold medal in the combination. He also finished fifth in the Super- G and the ninth place in the giant slalom.

In the season 1992/93 Pole reached its best result in fifth place in the departure of Kvitfjell on March 20, 1993, was the second time Italian champion in the combination. In the 1993/94 season he placed ninth in Super -G Lech, but could not connect to its previous performance afterwards. His last World Cup race was the Super -G from Kitzbuehel on January 16, 1995.

Pole was an all-rounder and reached the World Cup in all disciplines a place among the top seven. After his active racing career, he trained as a ski instructor.
