Josef Schmid (athlete)

Josef Schmid ( * February 15, 1953 in Altshausen ) is a retired German middle distance runner who was starting successfully for the Federal Republic in the early 1970s on the 800 -meter distance.

At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 he reached the semifinals, but retired there in fourth place its run in 1:48,8 min off. In the Indoor Athletics Championships 1973, he won gold in the 4-by- 4-round season with the West German team in the cast Reinhold Soyka, Schmid, Thomas Wessinghage and Paul -Heinz Wellmann.

In 1974, he retired at the European Championships in Rome in eighth and the last of his semi-final. In 1976 he won at the European Indoor Championships in Munich silver in 1:49,8 min, however, was clearly behind the Belgians Ivo van Damme.

1973 and 1974 he was German indoor champion over 800 m.

Josef Schmid is 1,80 m tall and weighed in his playing days 70 kg. He started for the LG Saulgau and from 1973 for Salamander Kornwestheim. With the baton from Salamander Kornwestheim Schmid 1975 German indoor champion in the 3- times -1000 - meter relay and outdoors in 1974 and 1975 German champion in the 4 x 800 - meter relay.
