Joseph H. Boardman

Joseph H. Boardman ( born 1948 in Rome, New York) is an American civil servant and currently Chief Executive Officer ( CEO) and president of the state railway company Amtrak.

Life

Joseph Boardman grew up as the second of eight children on a dairy farm in Taberg in Oneida County in upstate New York. In 1966 he volunteered for the United States Air Force and was used from 1968 to 1969 in Vietnam.

After his release, he studied at Cornell University in Ithaca and graduated as Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Economics. The Master of Science in Management Science, he received at the State University of New York at Binghamton.

From July 1981 to December 1988 he was Commissioner of Public Transportation in Broome County, New York. During this time he improved the public transport offer. Thus, the entire bus network has been revised and created a new pricing system. In addition, the bus fleet has been extensively renovated and rebuilt in the vehicle workshop.

In July 1981, he co-founded the New York Public Transit Association, an association of providers of public transport services. From 1987 to 1989 he was president of this association. From 1989 he worked as Chief Operating Officer for the company Progressive Transportation Services Inc. This consulting company supported several communities in New York in the improvement of local and regional public transport services.

On February 23, 1995, he joined the Department of Transportation of the State of New York. At first he was Assistant Commissioner for the Office of Public Transportation and First Deputy Commissioner. As of February 1997, Boardman, who belongs to the Republicans, Acting Commissioner ( Head ) of the Department of Transportation, and thus a member of the State Government of Governor George Pataki. On July 22, 1997, he was finally appointed Commissioner. As a result, he was heavily involved in the expansion of the range of Amtrak in New York. He also led a procurement regulations that promoted ahead of schedule completion of construction activities and would allow penalties in case of default.

In 2005, he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board from 2000 to 2005 Chairman of the Standing Committee on Rail Transportation ( SCORT ) of the American Association of the State Highway and Transportation Officials ( AASHTO ) and was responsible for, inter alia, studies on the need for investment and profitability intermodal intercourse.

On 28 April 2005, he was confirmed by the Senate as the eleventh head of the state railway authority ( Federal Railroad Administration ). At the same time he became the representative of the Ministry of Transport of the United States on the board of Amtrak.

On 26 November 2008 Boardman was appointed for one year as CEO and President of Amtrak, after Alexander K. Kummant had resigned earlier this month.

Boardman lives with his wife in Washington. The two have three children.
