Joseph Sattler

Joseph Kaspar Sattler ( born July 20, 1867 in Schrobenhausen, † May 12, 1931 in Munich ) was a painter, illustrator and Ex-libris in the Art Nouveau style.

Biography

He was primarily as Art Nouveau artist of his ex -libris and illustrations, including known for the magazine Pan. After an apprenticeship as a painter and gilder with his father in Landshut, he studied at the Munich Art Academy and settled as a freelance artist in Munich. Numerous illustrations, Ex - Libris, posters and works for the Reichsdruckerei led him to Strasbourg ( école des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg ) and Berlin. Inter alia he also designed in 1897 the font ' font Nibelungen ', which was used for his monumental work, "Die Nibelungen " which Germany was at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. Of these, only 200 copies were printed. 1917 Sattler was appointed professor in Strasbourg. He is regarded as one of the leading pioneers of Art Nouveau, his illustrations appeared among others in Simplicissimus.
