Joseph Serge Miot

Joseph Serge Miot ( born November 23, 1946 in Jérémie, Haiti, † January 12, 2010 in Port -au -Prince, Haiti) was Archbishop of Port -au -Prince.

Life

Joseph Serge Miot studied philosophy and theology at the Grand Séminaire Notre- Dame de Turgeau in Port -au -Prince. He received on 4 July 1975 in the Cathedral of Jérémie ordained a priest by Bishop Augustin Remy SMM and was assistant priest in Jérémie. From 1975 he studied philosophy at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, where in 1982 the Dr. phil. received his doctorate. From 1978 to 1994 he was professor of philosophy at the Grand Séminaire Notre- Dame de Turgeau. From 1994 to 1995 he held a visiting professor at the Institut Catholique de Paris. From 1996 to 1998 he was rector of the Université Notre Dame d' Haïti.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop and Apostolic Administrator 1997 sede plena of the Archdiocese of Port-au -Prince. He received his episcopal consecration on October 12, 1997 Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti; Co-consecrators were François Gayot SMM, Archbishop of Cap- Haïtien and Archbishop François- Wolff Ligonde. Joseph Serge Miot was on 1 March 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as successor to the retiring Ligonde Archbishop of Port-au -Prince. He was President of the Commission for evangelism and mission as well as the Commission for Justice and Peace of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti. He was a member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

Archbishop Serge Miot died at the age of 63 years in the earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010. He was killed in his office by debris. The earthquake also the Cathedral of Port -au -Prince was destroyed.

At the funeral of the archbishop on 23 January 2010, 1,000 people participated. Among the assembled dignitaries included President Rene Preval and the Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Bernardito Cleopas Auza. The funeral was held in a small park. There, beside the coffin of Joseph Serge Miot was also the vicar Charles Benoit, who was also killed in the quake.
