Joseph Thomas McGucken

Joseph Thomas McGucken ( born March 13, 1902 in Los Angeles, USA; † 26 October 1983) was Archbishop of San Francisco.

Life

Joseph Thomas McGucken received on 15 January 1928, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

On February 4, 1941, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Bishop of Sanavus and appointed him auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles. The archbishop of Los Angeles, John Joseph Cantwell, donated to him on 19 March of the same year the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Tucson, Daniel James Gercke, and the Bishop of Monterey - Fresno, Philip George shearing.

On October 26, 1955 he was appointed by Pope Pius XII. the Coadjutor Bishop of Sacramento. Joseph Thomas McGucken was on 14 January 1957 in succession to the late Robert John Armstrong Bishop of Sacramento.

On February 19, 1962, he was named by Pope John XXIII. Archbishop of San Francisco. The inauguration took place on April 3 of the same year.

Pope Paul VI. adopted on 16 February 1977 at the Joseph Thomas McGucken put forward reasons of age resignation.
