Juan Francisco Luis

Juan Francisco Luis ( * July 10, 1940 in Vieques, Puerto Rico; † 4 June 2011 Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands ) was an American politician. Between 1978 and 1987 he was governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Career

Even as a small child at the age of two months was Juan Francisco Luis with his parents to St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. He attended the local Christiansted High School. He then studied at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. Then he returned to Saint Croix, where he worked for some time as a teacher. He was also for the territorial Ministry of Construction and Development ( Department of Housing and Urban Development ) operates. Subsequently, he served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he held a number of offices in the territorial government. In the meantime, he also worked in the private sector, including as managers and accountants.

In 1972, Luis was elected as a member of the Independent Citizens Movement in the Senate of the Virgin Islands. Since 1974, he served as Deputy Governor Deputy Governor Cyril E. King. After his death he took over in accordance with the Constitution whose term as governor, he held after two elections between January 2, 1978 to January 5, 1987. A direct re-election in 1986 was prohibited by the Constitution. In 1990 he applied unsuccessfully to return to his former position. He died on June 4, 2011 in a hospital on Saint Croix. Juan Luis was married since 1968 with Luz Maria Guadalupe, with whom he had two children.
