James Harrison Oliver

James Harrison Oliver ( born January 15, 1857 Houston County, Georgia, † April 6, 1928 in Charles City, Virginia) was an American naval officer. Between 1917 and 1919 he was military governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Career

James Oliver visited in Lexington until 1872 the Washington and Lee University. He then attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He then began a long military career in the U.S. Navy, where he served 1877-1921 and rose to the Rear Admiral. In 1905 he was sent to a ship collision, in which he was involved, tried by a military court, but there acquitted. From anger about the procedure he resigned temporarily in 1905 to military service. In 1906 he returned to the Navy, where he continued his career. In 1910 he was promoted to captain in 1916 and was appointed rear admiral.

In 1917 Oliver was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson for the first governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Until the arrival of his new workplace, he was represented there by Edwin Taylor Pollock interim basis. Oliver held his new office 1917-1919 at this time., The local defenses were expanded. He also supported the formation of the native population and called for the deployment of more teachers in this area. In 1921, James Oliver retired from the military service. He died on April 6, 1928 in his home in Charles City, which he had acquired in 1893.
