History

The university was founded in 1969 as part of the twin University Trier- Kaiserslautern, to give new impetus to the marginal town. 1970, the teaching was recorded with 191 students. Became the first president of the experimental physicist Helmut Ehrhardt, who remained in office until 1981. Settled was the university in the premises of the former teacher training college, but in 1971 was above the town on the edge of the Palatinate Forest started the construction of a new university campus, which has grown until today more and more. 1975 Double University has been disconnected due to the rapid growth, since then the University of Kaiserslautern independently and the only university in Rhineland -Palatinate with scientific and technical orientation.

With the change in the Rhineland- Palatinate Higher Education Act of September 1, 2003, the technical and scientific orientation of the university was taken into account and they renamed the Technical University of Kaiserslautern.

In 1992, the central scientific institution Center for Distance Learning and Continuing Education was established at the university. The facility has become one of the leading providers of postgraduate distance learning in Germany. The distance learning programs offered contact graduates and are created while working. In the winter semester 2009/2010 the Fernstudienzentrum lists about 3,700 remote students from all over Germany and its neighboring countries and overseas. A total of about 12,510 students are enrolled at the TU (as of winter semester 2010 /11).

Divisions

At the University of 65 courses (42 subjects ) are offered in 12 departments, 18 of them as distance learning courses (as of 2013). A special feature is the early introduction to the mathematics and physics program, which is intended primarily for students or fresh-baked graduates. The so-called "early entry via distance learning " are now available for the fan electrical and mechanical engineering. On 31 October 2007 the separation of the Department of ARUBI was resolved into three separate departments by the Senate, which was completed on 1 February 2011.

Research priorities

The practical orientation of the TU and the intensive cooperation with industrial companies led to the establishment of a number of research institutes and university near companies. The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Technical and Industrial Mathematics work closely with the university and now have an international reputation. The Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques has a field office for THz measurement technology and systems on campus. At the TU the patent information center is located, which is a recognized partner of the German Patent and Trademark Office in Rhineland -Palatinate and supports the practical application of research results.

Two other research centers have been established in mid-2008 at the University of Kaiserslautern, which aim to large, coordinated research projects, such as collaborative research centers set up. The State Research Center Optics and Material Sciences ( Optimas ) and the Research Center of Mathematical and Computational Modelling " (CM ) ². Optimas deals with the topics of light, spin and matter, and supervised the construction of the Technical University in an interdisciplinary environment of photonics, spintronics, molecular and magnetic functional materials and nanostructures. The "Center of Mathematical and Computational Modelling" (CM ) ² operates in the fields of development, application and improvement of mathematical models in engineering.

Other renowned research areas are listed below:

  • Advanced Materials Engineering ( AME)
  • Ambient Systems - Technologies and Applications ( AmSys )
  • Membrane Transport: From Molecular Principles to Physiological Relevance ( membrane transport)
  • Nanostructured Catalysts for at Efficient Use of Raw Materials ( NanoKat )
  • Sustainable Construction ( Sustainable Resource Conservation in Civil Engineering, Urbanism and Economy - RESCUE )
  • Composite components with thermoplastic and thermoset plastics as well as function-optimized fiber and particle reinforcements for applications in the automotive, aerospace, mechanical engineering, power engineering, construction, sports and leisure equipment, and medical
  • Country's technology focus: Center for Commercial Vehicle Technology ( ZNT )
  • Country focus: Region and City

Rankings

In particular, the Department of Mathematics was much talked about in the recent past by top rankings in various university rankings. The University now enjoys a reputation as a " Mecca of mathematics students." Further evidence of the high reputation of the Mathematics Department is to be seen in the CHE special evaluation " Diverse Excellence 2012" in which the department belongs in all categories to the top group.

In October 2009, four pilot departments of the University at the competition excellence in teaching were able to prevail against 107 other universities and win a prize of 1 million euros. The concept of TU Kaiserslautern provides a number of smaller projects, such as lecture or an eight-week pre- bachelor's program to first-year students ( freshmen ) facilitate the bachelor program. An important component of the concept is the involvement of students as partners, as already done very successfully in the pilot departments.

Furthermore, the courses in physics, engineering, computer science, industrial engineering and electrical engineering gained numerous top 10 rankings in recent years. Thus, the study Industrial Engineering obtained in 2010, the fourth and the following year in fifth place in the university ranking of Business Week.
