Kalkot Mataskelekele

Kalkot Mataskelekele ( * 1949 ) is a politician vanuatuischer. He was 16 August 2004 to 16 August 2009, President of Vanuatu.

He is a lawyer from the capital Port Vila and the first head of state of Vanuatu, which has a university degree.

Mataskelekele already had a candidate with the support of the reign of Edward Fanua'ariki in the presidential election in April 2004, but was defeated at that time Alfred Maseng Nalo. Following the resignation of Maseng and new parliamentary elections, a new presidential election was held on 12 August 2004, which lasted until 16 August. After Willie David Saul with 27 and Donald Kalpokas had not been reached by 26 votes the constitutional majority of votes in the ballot on 13 August 2004 and the ballots on 16 August 2004 initially provided no majority in favor of the candidates, the Supreme Judge, that the should meet election meeting to the constitutional election of a president. Kalpokas withdrew his candidacy, so that eventually Mataskelekele with 49 votes was elected on 7 votes for Saul as President.

Mataskelekele brother was the first Prime Minister of independent Vanuatu, Walter Lini Hadye.
