Kanimozhi

Kanimozhi (also: Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Tamil: கனிமொழி [ kanimoɻi ]; born January 5, 1968 in Chennai) is an Indian politician of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regional party (DMK) and poet. Since 2007 she is a Member of Rajya Sabha in, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Kanimozhi is the daughter of DMK leader M. Karunanidhi.

Biography

Kanimozhi was born on 5 January 1968 in Chennai ( Madras). She is the daughter of longtime DMK leader and former Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi and his wife Rajathi. After completing her Master's degree in Economics, she worked from 1992 for four years for the daily newspaper The Hindu. In 1997 she moved for a short time with her husband to Singapore, where she worked for the local Tamil newspaper Tamil Murasu. Since her return to India, she is a member of the Board of the Cultural Organization of Tamil Maiyam, which works to promote Tamil art, literature and culture. Kanimozhi is also self- literary activities and has published three books of poetry and two non- fictional works.

After Kanimozhi was for some time been a member of the DMK, but had not been politically active, she was elected by Parliament for the Tamil Nadu state representative in the Rajya Sabha in 2007.

In connection with the massive corruption scandal over the allocation of 2G mobile licenses, the Indian federal police CBI Kanimozhi accused to have the former telecom minister A. Raja, who played a central role in the corruption scandal patronized, and the "active brain" behind the owned the Karunanidhi family located Kalaignar TV broadcaster to have been payment of bribes in the amount of two billion rupees received. She even denies that it knew about the money transfers. On 20 May 2011 Kanimozhi was taken into custody. After more an more than six-month detention, she was released on bail on 29 November.

Familial

Kanimozhi is married since 1997 to his second wife G. Aravindan, a Tamil businessman and literary translators from Singapore. She has a son.
