He worked from 1872 as professor of applied medical chemistry at the University of Prague, where he served 1895/1896 as rector, and dealt in particular with the emergence of endogenous substances and their detection in body fluids.

Life and work

Karl Hugo Huppert, the son of merchant and wood turner Christian Huppert, graduated from the University of Leipzig, among others, as a student of the physiologist Karl Gotthelf Lehmann (1812-1863), as well as at the University of Jena. He took over in 1860 the line of the chemical laboratory at the James Hospital in Leipzig, obtaining his doctorate in 1862, Dr. med, habilitated in the same year in physiological chemistry and was appointed at the same time head of the zoochemischen laboratory at this hospital. From 1861 to 1972 he taught at the University of Leipzig. He was appointed associate professor in Leipzig in 1872, but declined in the same year the call to the newly established Department of Applied Medical Chemistry at the University of Prague.

In Prague Huppert led from 1872 teaching in applied medical chemistry. Among the many present his themes of physiological and pathological chemistry, he mainly dealt with the emergence of endogenous substances such as blood and bile pigments, and glycogen, and their detection in body fluids such as blood, pus, bile or urine. His findings and insights he published in numerous publications. Among his pupils were, among others, Franz Hofmeister, Rudolf von Jaksch, Otto Kahler and Franz von Soxhlet.

Huppert was a member of the committee that deals with the reorganization of medical studies, especially the " knowledge machinations ", dealt to the University of Prague.
