Karl Ritter von Goebel

Karl Ritter von Goebel (actually Karl Immanuel Eberhard Ritter von Goebel ) ( born March 8, 1855 in cheap home; † October 9, 1932 in Munich) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " KIGoebel ".

Life and work

Karl Immanuel Eberhard Goebel was the son of a factory owner. As he should become a priest after the early death of his father, he visited the boys' school in Korntal and the seminar in Blaubeuren. From 1873 he studied theology and philosophy, along with Botany (with Wilhelm Hofmeister) at the University of Tübingen. In 1876 he moved to Strasbourg, where he studied with Anton de Bary and became the Dr. phil doctorate in this 1877. 1878 Goebel assistant at Julius Sachs, where he qualified as a professor in 1880 and professor at the University of Würzburg.

In 1881 he became first assistant in August Schenk at the University of Leipzig, then associate professor in Strasbourg in 1882 and 1883 associate professor at the University of Rostock, where he In 1884, the Botanical Garden and Botanical Institute. From 1887 to 1891 he was a professor in Marburg and from 1891 to 1931 at the University of Munich. Here he put on the new Botanical Garden in Nymphenburg and was its first director. In 1892 he became a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. 1909 brought him the Bavarian king to the nobility.

In 1885 and 1886 he undertook expeditions to Ceylon and Java, 1890 and 1891 in Venezuela and in the then British Guiana.

Main areas of work of Goebel were the comparative and functional anatomy, morphology and physiology of plants under development phylogenetics and the influence of external factors on the " reaction width " of their seedlings. Goebel stressed the dependence of the shape of an organism from its function and was therefore one of the founders of experimental direction in morphology.

Since 1889 Goebel was editor of the magazine "Flora". 1931 Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London awarded him. Since 1914 he was a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.
