Geography

Karlstetten is in the Most district in Lower Austria on the southwestern edge of the Dunkelsteinerwald. The area of ​​the municipality covers 28.21 square kilometers. 43.15 percent of the area is forested.

The municipality comprises the cadastral Hausbach, Heitzing, Karlstetten, Lauterbach, Obermamau, Schaubing, Untermamau and Weyersdorf.

History

In ancient times, the area was part of the province of Noricum. On September 9, 1083, the village was first mentioned in the Göttweiger Deed. In the core Austrian state of Lower Austria lying the place told the eventful history of Austria. From 1459 to 1813 the Zinzendorfer held the lordship. This was followed by Count Baudissin and Baron von Suttner Candid until the estate was purchased by the German industrialist Zacharias Frank in 1925. In 1945, the estate of the Russian occupying power was seized as " German property" and went in 1965 in the hands of the municipality over.

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1,999 inhabitants. In 1991, the market town of 1,787 inhabitants in 1981 and 1,723 in 1971, 1,578 inhabitants.
