Katarina Taikon

Katarina Taikon -Langhammer ( born July 29, 1932 in Örebro Almby as Catherine Mary, † 30 December 1995 Ytterhogdal, community Härjedalen ) was a Swedish author and actress from the Roma people. She lived alternately in Henriksdalsberget and Nacka.

Katarina Taikon was very known for her autobiographical children's books with the Roma girls Katitzi as the main character, with whom she went to the Swedish schools to achieve a change in the handling of Swedish society with Rome. Your total of 13 Katitzi books have been translated into several languages. They are available in Norwegian, Danish, French, German, Hungarian and Czech. Only in 2008 the first published translation of one of their Katizi books in Romani. In 1979 a Swedish television series Katitzi was produced as the main person.

Taikon was very active in the debate on the rights of the Swedish Roma. Like most Roma of her generation she had never allowed to go to school and first learned the age of 26 reading and writing when she was already married to his second wife and had two daughters. At 15, she played the lead role in the ten-minute short film " Uppbrott " by Arne Sucksdorff. During this time, she reached a divorce from her 19 -year-old man who cheated on her, had beaten and raped by the supreme court of the Swedish Rome ( "kris "). She is a sister of actress and silversmith Rosa Taikon.

Katarina Taikon died after 14 years in a coma as the result of brain damage she had suffered from an accident.
