Kauksi ( German Kauks ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian Ida- Viru. It belongs to the rural community Iisaku. Kauksi has 59 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2006). It lies on the north bank of the largest Estonian waters, of Lake Peipus ( Peipsi järv ).

Description and History

Kauksi was first mentioned in documents in 1543. 1732 the village belonged to the estate of Maidla.

In the 18th century private mansion in Kauksi was built directly on Lake Peipus. It was owned by the Russian nobles Michailo Rudneff. The estate maintained a private harbor with ferries connecting to Tartu.

Kauksi is popular in summer mainly as a tourist destination. From the village there is a nearly continuous sandy beach stretches on the shores of Lake Peipsi along until after Vasknarva. The air and water temperatures are on average higher than in other Estonian beaches. 1961 tourist center was opened in Kauksi.
