Keelung

Keelung ( Jilong or even Chilung, Chinese基隆市, Pinyin Jilong Shì, PEH oē - jī Ke - long chhi ) is a port city in northeastern Taiwan.

History

Keelung has a special historical significance, since the Spaniards in 1626 for the first time in Taiwan built a fortified settlement (San Salvador). Three years later, they built a second fort in Tamsui (Fort Santo Domingo ). 1642 attracted the Spaniards after a long siege by the Dutch from Taiwan from after they had some years before abandoned Fort Santo Domingo. The Dutch in turn fled from Keelung after Koxinga ( Zheng Chenggong ) had conquered the Dutch settlement located in southern Taiwan, Tainan. They returned two years later back again, gave the base but finally in 1668 because of trade with China did not produce the hoped-for profits.

During the Sino - French War Keelung was occupied during the period from October 1, 1884 to June 22, 1885 by French troops under General Jacques Duchesne.

Presence

Today Keelung is a relatively modern city with about 390,000 inhabitants ( 2008). The city has the second most important port in Taiwan, which extends to the city center. Comparatively, the famous night market.
